South Korea has launched its first bank-led Korean won stablecoin proof-of-concept, naming BTQ Technologies as the project’s core post-quantum security provider. Under the initiative, BTQ will deploy its Quantum Secure Stablecoin Settlement Network within iM Bank’s pilot infrastructure, working alongside local technology vendor Finger Inc.

The pilot is designed to integrate quantum-resilient cryptography into a regulated KRW stablecoin framework. It will run on the Kaia mainnet, which was formed through the merger of Klaytn and Finschia. The move signals that South Korea is not only exploring stablecoin issuance, but also focusing on long-term infrastructure security as digital finance evolves.

Core areas of the pilot

The proof-of-concept will test several foundational components. One major objective is real-time reconciliation between bank reserves and on-chain token supply, a critical requirement for trust and transparency in any regulated stablecoin model. The project will also examine standardized smart contract design, which could help support consistency in compliance, auditing, and future interoperability. In addition, the pilot includes overseas distribution connectivity, suggesting an interest in potential cross-border use cases rather than limiting the stablecoin to domestic payments alone.

The development comes as eight Korean banks are planning a joint venture to issue a KRW stablecoin. That broader push reflects rising concern over the growing influence of foreign digital currencies and a desire to strengthen domestic financial autonomy through locally anchored digital money infrastructure.

Post-quantum security moves closer to financial deployment

BTQ’s role in the pilot highlights the growing importance of quantum security in financial systems. Stablecoins rely heavily on cryptography, smart contracts, and settlement rails, making long-term resilience a strategic issue as the potential impact of future quantum computing becomes harder to ignore. By embedding post-quantum protections into a bank-led pilot at an early stage, the project shows that security planning is increasingly being treated as a core design principle rather than a later upgrade.
