S&P Dow Jones Indices has rolled out the S&P Digital Markets 50, a novel mixed basket index combining 15 major cryptocurrencies with 35 crypto-related stocks, designed to give investors cleaner, broader exposure to digital assets, as first reported by Barron's journalist Nate Wolf. The index was developed in partnership with blockchain firm Dinari.
Index Composition and Rules
Each asset is capped at 5% to ensure diversification. Cryptocurrencies must have a market cap of at least $300 million to be included, while equities require a minimum of $100 million. The index rebalances quarterly under S&P governance. Initial components include Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other major coins, along with Coinbase, MicroStrategy, and other crypto-exposed equities.
From Margins to Mainstream
“Cryptocurrencies and the broader digital asset industry have moved from the margins into a more established role in global markets,” said Cameron Drinkwater, chief product officer at S&P Dow Jones Indices. Pairing stocks with crypto is a first for S&P. The timing is favorable: Coinbase is up 55% in 2025, Bitcoin hit a record high this week, and crypto-adjacent names are gathering momentum.
Dinari’s Tokenized Investment Vehicle
Dinari plans to launch an investable token tracking the benchmark on its dShares platform by year-end, using tokenization to trade on blockchains rather than traditional rails. Dinari CEO Gabriel Otte said that even clients wary of picking individual coins repeatedly ask for exposure to crypto, creating demand for an “S&P 500 of the space.” Indexing won’t eliminate volatility, but it may help tame it and offer allocators a cleaner on-ramp.
The S&P Digital Markets 50 marks the first time a major traditional index provider has formally integrated cryptocurrencies with public equities into a single rules-based instrument, providing institutional and retail investors a transparent, diversified gateway to digital assets.
