S&P Global said it has completed its acquisition of onchain security firm OpenZeppelin, a deal that was first announced on Sept. 17, 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed. The company said the transaction will add to its digital asset risk assessment business and support both traditional financial institutions and onchain finance companies in evaluating smart contract and underlying technology risks. Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin provides smart contract security audits, secure development services, and an open-source contract library. Its security team has completed more than 900 audit engagements and identified more than 10,000 vulnerabilities before products went live. The company said OpenZeppelin Contracts has supported more than $38 trillion in cumulative value transferred across major stablecoins and tokenized funds. After the deal, OpenZeppelin will continue to operate as an independent business unit. Founder Demian Brener will remain with the company and report to Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings. OpenZeppelin Contracts will remain open-source, free to use, and publicly maintained.

S&P Global said it has completed its acquisition of onchain security company OpenZeppelin. The deal was first announced on Sept. 17, 2026, and financial terms were not disclosed.

The company said the acquisition will strengthen its digital asset risk assessment business, helping traditional financial institutions and onchain finance firms assess smart contract risk and risks tied to underlying technology.

OpenZeppelin to remain a standalone business unit

Following the close, OpenZeppelin will continue operating as an independent business unit. Founder Demian Brener will stay on and report to Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings.

OpenZeppelin Contracts will remain open-source, free, and publicly maintained.

OpenZeppelin’s security business and operating metrics

Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin provides smart contract security audits, secure development services, and an open-source contract library.

Its security team has completed more than 900 audit projects and found more than 10,000 vulnerabilities before products launched. The OpenZeppelin Contracts library has supported more than $38 trillion in cumulative value transferred, including across several major stablecoins and tokenized funds.

Why S&P Global says the deal matters

S&P Global said smart contract and underlying technology risk assessment will become more important as more financial assets and capital markets activity move onchain.

The acquisition is intended to combine OpenZeppelin’s onchain security technology with S&P Global’s institutional client network and global distribution capabilities to broaden its digital asset risk assessment services.
