S&P Dow Jones Indices has rolled out the S&P Digital Markets 50, a hybrid index that combines 15 major cryptocurrencies with 35 equities tied to the digital asset space, according to a report from Barron’s. Developed in collaboration with blockchain firm Dinari, the index aims to offer investors a rules-based, single benchmark for a market that has historically been fragmented and volatile.

Composition and Rules

The S&P Digital Markets 50 imposes strict eligibility criteria: no single asset can exceed a 5% weight; equities must have a market capitalization of at least $100 million to be considered for inclusion, while cryptocurrencies require a minimum market cap of $300 million; and the index rebalances quarterly under S&P governance. This structure is designed to manage risk while capturing the growth potential of the digital asset ecosystem.

Tokenized Investment Vehicle

Dinari intends to launch a tokenized product on its dShares platform before the end of the year that tracks the benchmark. The token will trade on blockchains rather than traditional exchanges, leveraging tokenization to provide direct exposure. “Portfolio managers keep hearing, ‘we want some exposure to crypto,’ even from clients wary of picking individual coins,” said Gabriel Otte, CEO of Dinari. “They are looking for an ‘S&P 500 of the space.’” He added that indexing won’t eliminate the whiplash inherent in crypto markets, but it may tame it and hand allocators a cleaner on-ramp.

Market Context and Significance

The timing aligns with surging crypto markets: Coinbase is up 55% in 2025, Bitcoin hit a new all-time high this week, and other crypto-adjacent names have momentum. Cameron Drinkwater, chief product officer at S&P Dow Jones Indices, emphasized that “cryptocurrencies and the broader digital asset industry have moved from the margins into a more established role in global markets.” The launch represents a significant step in the convergence of traditional finance and the crypto world, offering institutional investors a standardized, diversified exposure tool. By pairing equities and digital assets in a single index, S&P aims to lower the barrier for allocators seeking broad exposure without the complexity of selecting individual coins or stocks.
