SpaceX has officially named Chun Wang, founder of F2Pool—one of the world’s largest Bitcoin mining pools—as the commander of its first crewed Mars mission. The company disclosed that Wang holds a personal Bitcoin portfolio valued at over $300 million. He will step back from his crypto and blockchain responsibilities for the two-year mission.
From Mining Pool to Interplanetary Command
F2Pool currently controls roughly 11.3% of the Bitcoin network's total hashrate. Wang's leap from digital mining to deep-space leadership is widely seen as a preparatory move for SpaceX’s earliest round-trip Mars flights. The crew, including Wang, will travel aboard the new Starship V3, circling as close as 200 kilometers to the Moon's surface in the first week before setting course for Mars.
Risks and Starship V3 Technical Specs
SpaceX warned that the crew will face significant hazards including hardware degradation, extreme temperature swings, and fuel management challenges. To mitigate these, the mission will debut the third-generation Starship V3, featuring vacuum-insulated fuel lines, advanced high-voltage cryogenic circulation systems, and 60 specialized electronic units—each capable of isolating faults while distributing up to 9 MW of power.
Scientific Goals of the Mars Mission
One core objective is to conduct the first-ever X-ray imaging of astronauts in microgravity, analyzing potential damage to bones and organs from prolonged spaceflight. The crew will also participate in behavioral health monitoring. These findings will provide foundational data for establishing a permanent colony on Mars. During the return phase, Starship's autonomous navigation, radiation shielding, and fuel transfer systems will be tested directly, with all technical and biomedical data feeding into Elon Musk’s vision of safe, reusable Mars transport.
SpaceX’s Bitcoin Holdings and IPO Filing
Alongside the Mars announcement, SpaceX revealed it has secretly filed for an IPO at a record valuation of $1.75 trillion—the highest in history. The company also formally disclosed for the first time that it holds 8,285 Bitcoins, ending months of speculation and adding transparency to its digital asset portfolio.
The Mars mission is scheduled for 2026. The combination of a crypto billionaire commanding a spacecraft and SpaceX holding a Bitcoin treasury marks a unique convergence of digital and physical frontiers.
