Switzerland Adds Another Bitcoin Payment Venue: SPAR in Zug

SPAR, one of the largest supermarket chains in Switzerland, now accepts Bitcoin payments at its location in Zug, also known as 'Crypto Valley'. The implementation leverages the Lightning Network via DFX Swiss's OpenCryptoPay solution, enabling instant point-of-sale transactions.

DFX Swiss announced that this SPAR store is among the first supermarkets in Switzerland where customers can pay directly at checkout using Bitcoin via LNURL. The move could pave the way for expansion across SPAR's network of over 13,900 stores in 48 countries, serving approximately 14.7 million customers daily.

Lugano's 'Plan ₿' Accelerates Bitcoin Adoption

Beyond Zug, Lugano has been leading the charge with its 'Plan ₿' initiative, backed by Mayor Michele Foletti. The plan aims to make Bitcoin a de facto legal tender in the city, already enabling Bitcoin payments for taxes, public services, and at hundreds of local merchants. Lugano has also partnered with Tether to establish a technology education centre and startup fund.

These efforts, combined with SPAR's new payment option, highlight Switzerland's progressive stance on integrating Bitcoin into everyday commerce.

User-Friendly Payment Experience

Rahim Taghizadegan, director of Bitcoin Association Switzerland, demonstrated the simplicity of the system: 'Just scan a static QR code, send sats, immediate and easy registration by the cashier.' This approach aligns with Switzerland's vision of making Bitcoin accessible to average consumers. As Lightning Network technology matures, more retail chains are expected to follow SPAR's example.
