Square Enix, one of Japan’s best-known AAA game publishers and developers, has announced Symbiogenesis, a new story-driven interactive experience centered on NFTs. The project will be built on Ethereum and is designed to use NFT-based digital art as part of both user identity and the broader product ecosystem, including profile picture functionality and a separate NFT marketplace.
A New NFT Experience Rather Than a Legacy Franchise Tie-In
The announcement clarified speculation surrounding the title, which had led some observers to wonder whether it was connected to the company’s Parasite Eve franchise because of its name. Square Enix instead presented Symbiogenesis as a distinct concept with a different narrative foundation.
According to the company, the project revolves around a collection of character “symbiosis” pieces that users can obtain as NFT digital art. These assets are not positioned merely as collectibles. Instead, they are embedded into the project’s story structure, where characters participate in missions tied to themes such as the monopolization and distribution of resources.
This approach suggests that Square Enix is attempting to connect digital ownership with storytelling rather than treating NFTs as standalone merchandise. In that sense, Symbiogenesis appears to be framed less as a traditional game launch and more as an interactive narrative ecosystem where collectible assets help shape the user experience.
Built on Ethereum
Square Enix said that the blockchain component of Symbiogenesis will use Ethereum. That choice places the project within one of the most established NFT ecosystems in the market, potentially giving it access to familiar wallet infrastructure, marketplace conventions, and a broader base of users already active in blockchain-based digital collectibles.
At the time of the announcement, the company indicated that Symbiogenesis was scheduled for release in Spring 2023. While the original materials focused more on the concept and strategic direction than on detailed gameplay systems, the Ethereum integration made clear that blockchain infrastructure would be a core part of the experience rather than an optional add-on.
Part of a Broader Web3 Push
Symbiogenesis is notable because it represents one of the first projects Square Enix has developed from the ground up with a Web3-oriented design philosophy. The company has been one of several large traditional game publishers to publicly signal interest in blockchain-based game mechanics and decentralized digital ownership, even as the wider gaming industry remains divided on the value of NFTs.
Its support for Web3 has not been limited to public statements. Square Enix has also worked with Oasys, a Japanese blockchain project focused on Web3 gaming. Beyond partnership activity, the company has participated as a validator on the Oasys blockchain while the network moves through its mainnet launch phase. That involvement indicates a deeper level of engagement with blockchain gaming infrastructure than simply licensing intellectual property for tokenized products.
NFTs as Part of Business Strategy
Earlier, in May, Square Enix had already made clear that blockchain gaming would form part of its broader business strategy. The company said it was considering the creation of new intellectual properties in which NFTs would play a role in world-building. The concept behind Symbiogenesis aligns closely with that vision, as the project appears to place tokenized character art inside the narrative architecture itself.
This is an important distinction in how major publishers approach the space. Rather than using NFTs only as commemorative items or limited digital merchandise, Square Enix has described a model in which tokenized assets become part of the fiction, interaction, and thematic structure of the product. Whether that model resonates with players is a separate question, but strategically it demonstrates a more integrated use case.
Previous NFT Plans Around Major Franchises
Square Enix has also explored NFTs through existing franchise properties. In July, the company announced an NFT collection tied to Final Fantasy VII as part of the franchise’s 25th anniversary celebration. Those digital assets were set to be issued on Efinity, a network powered by Enjin, showing that the company was willing to experiment with more than one blockchain ecosystem depending on the product and use case.
That earlier move, combined with the Oasys partnership and now Symbiogenesis on Ethereum, paints a picture of a publisher testing multiple paths into blockchain-enabled content. Rather than committing to a single chain, Square Enix appears to be evaluating different infrastructure options while exploring how NFTs can be applied across collectibles, community participation, and interactive storytelling.
Why the Announcement Matters
The launch of Symbiogenesis is significant not because it confirms mass adoption of NFT gaming, but because it shows a major traditional publisher continuing to push ahead despite controversy around blockchain in games. The company is not only acknowledging NFTs as a commercial layer; it is attempting to place them at the center of a new interactive property.
For the broader market, the announcement also reflects a wider trend: established entertainment firms are still testing how digital ownership can be combined with intellectual property and user engagement. In Square Enix’s case, the emphasis is on a narrative-led structure in which NFT characters and art are intended to function as part of the storytelling framework.
Whether Symbiogenesis ultimately succeeds will depend on execution, user reception, and the company’s ability to balance blockchain functionality with a compelling experience. But on the facts available, the project stands as a concrete example of how a major gaming company is translating Web3 strategy into an actual product initiative.
In that respect, Symbiogenesis is more than a single NFT announcement. It marks another step in Square Enix’s ongoing effort to connect blockchain infrastructure, digital collectibles, and original IP development under a unified strategy for the next phase of interactive entertainment.
