Since December 2024, the share of stablecoins held on centralized exchanges has hovered between 40% and 46% of total circulating supply, according to CryptoQuant's on-chain data. But a large chunk of those funds has seen little active use — ample liquidity sits idle while trading activity stays muted.
Liquidity Plentiful, Activity Tepid
CryptoQuant defines the 'exchange supply ratio' as the percentage of an asset's total circulating supply stored on centralized platforms. Over the past 18 months, even as Bitcoin swung from nearly $125,000 to the $60,000 range, the overall liquidity structure barely budged. The market holds plenty of capital, but investors are not deploying it into risk positions.
According to CryptoQuant, liquidity remains abundant but is now highly selective. The platform notes that even minor shifts in confidence, risk appetite, or capital allocation can trigger outsized volatility in Bitcoin prices.
Bitcoin Wild Swings, Stablecoins Barely Move
Between late 2024 and mid-2026, Bitcoin surged to record highs near $125,000 before pulling back to the $60,000 zone. Yet the stablecoin exchange supply ratio fluctuated by at most 5 percentage points. This disconnect suggests that sharp price moves are less about broad liquidity flight and more about selective deployment of available capital. With growing institutional participation, this stable ratio is drawing close scrutiny from market observers.
Binance Controls Over a Quarter of Global Stablecoins
Data shows that Binance alone regularly holds between 25% and 30% of the global stablecoin supply, meaning it commands more than half of all stablecoins sitting on centralized exchanges. Binance remains one of the world's largest crypto exchanges by trading volume. Analysts believe this distribution pattern may indicate that structurally significant bottoms have already formed across the crypto market, with many participants having priced in downside liquidity risks.
For long-term investors, current conditions may favor a patient accumulation strategy even amid short-term turbulence. Still, the data primarily underscores the sustained prudence shaping investor behavior rather than signaling a definitive market direction.
