In a significant development for Bitcoin DeFi, the Stacks protocol has executed the first trustless native swap between the Bitcoin blockchain and the Stacks chain. Muneeb Ali, co-founder of Stacks, confirmed the milestone via Twitter on July 26, 2021, describing it as a "big deal." The swap involved a non-fungible token (NFT) called "Boombox (b-12)" and demonstrated that sending Bitcoin from one address to another can trigger smart contract actions on Stacks.
Catamaran Swap: A New Paradigm for Cross-Chain Trust
The transaction, dubbed a "Catamaran Swap" by the community, allows users to execute trustless asset transfers without relying on centralized exchanges or wrapped Bitcoin (wBTC). The swap conditions were defined on the Stacks chain, while the Bitcoin transfer and verification occurred on the main BTC chain. "Wrapped Bitcoin is not Bitcoin," Ali stressed in a tweet thread. "You can't use BTC to trade without going through either centralized exchanges or alt blockchains with wrapped Bitcoin. Not anymore."
Stacks acts as a Layer-1 blockchain that leverages Bitcoin as its base layer through the Proof-of-Transfer (PoX) consensus mechanism. Its Clarity smart contract language, similar to Ethereum's Solidity but tailored for Bitcoin, enables developers to build applications that directly interact with Bitcoin transactions. Ali noted that users can now do trustless BTC swaps to stablecoins, derivatives, perpetuals, and other crypto assets — all via pure Bitcoin transactions.
ALEX: A New Automated Market Maker on Stacks
The day after the native swap announcement, the Stacks ecosystem saw the launch of ALEX, an automated market maker (AMM) built on both Stacks and Bitcoin. According to its blog post, ALEX allows users to lend, earn, and borrow Bitcoin with minimized risk and maximized returns. It offers fixed-rate lending/borrowing, superior loan-to-value (LTV) ratios, and lower fees. "Yesterday, we saw trustless Bitcoin swaps; today, a new AMM ALEX came out built on Stacks + Bitcoin. The Bitcoin revolution is unstoppable," Ali tweeted.
ALEX aims to provide a Uniswap-like experience for native BTC, enabling liquidity pools and decentralized exchange functionality directly on Bitcoin. Ali also revealed that USD Coin (USDC) support is imminent, allowing trustless BTC/USDC swaps. All interactions are secured by the Bitcoin blockchain's robustness.
Competition and Challenges Ahead
Despite this breakthrough, Stacks faces stiff competition from existing projects like Thorchain, Badger DAO, and RSK. Thorchain has been offering trustless cross-chain swaps for some time, though it has endured multiple hacks. Meanwhile, Ethereum and Binance Smart Chain dominate Bitcoin DeFi via wrapped tokens; over 250,000 BTC (worth billions) are locked in various wrapped versions like WBTC, HBTC, and renBTC on Ethereum alone.
Ali argues that wrapped Bitcoin introduces trust assumptions, whereas Stacks' native approach preserves Bitcoin's sovereignty. "Bitcoin is sovereign money. An entire open financial world will be created around Bitcoin," he stated. With ALEX and future integrations, Stacks positions itself as a foundational layer for native Bitcoin DeFi — but it must overcome network effects and prove its security track record.
The coming months will reveal whether Stacks can attract enough liquidity and users to compete with established protocols. For now, the first trustless native swap and the ALEX launch mark a symbolic step toward a truly decentralized Bitcoin financial system.
