Stan Kladko, co-founder of SKALE Labs, said in a post on X that he has stepped down as chief technology officer and board director of SKALE Labs, the company he co-founded in 2017. He said he will remain a member of the SKALE Foundation council. In the post, Kladko said he wanted to explain the actions he is asking the foundation to take and argued that the community should be part of the discussion. He described SKALE as a protocol that depends on a small engineering team that develops, debugs and keeps the network online over the long term, adding that these builders understand the limits of what is technically possible. According to him, the foundation board currently has no builders on it. Kladko said protocol foundations without builders end up making decisions on roadmap, grants and network economics without the people needed to carry those decisions through. He proposed expanding the foundation board by three seats and filling them with people who have deep software and protocol engineering backgrounds. He added that the proposal has already been formally submitted to the foundation and that further updates will be shared when they can be disclosed.

Kladko said he wanted to explain the actions he is asking the foundation to take and said the community should be involved in the discussion.

He says the foundation board has no builders

Kladko described SKALE as a protocol that relies on a small team of engineers that develops, debugs and keeps the network online over the long term. He said those people have the clearest understanding of the boundary between what is technically possible and what is not, but added that there are currently no builders on the foundation board.

In his view, a protocol foundation without builders takes decisions on the roadmap, grants and network economics while lacking the people needed to put those decisions into practice.

Proposal calls for three additional seats

Kladko said that from Ethereum to Cosmos, protocols that operate well include engineers in discussions about long-term direction.

His proposal is to expand the foundation board by three seats and appoint people with deep software and protocol engineering backgrounds. He said the proposal has already been formally submitted to the foundation, and that updates will be shared later within the limits of what can be disclosed.

He also called on validators, delegators, app teams and token holders to speak publicly if they agree that the people building SKALE should take part in governance. He added that he will continue building SKALE.
