Starknet said a shift to post-quantum signatures would not require a protocol change, arguing that its account abstraction model lets users swap signature verification logic while keeping the same address, balance, and account history. The statement, posted on X, frames the migration path as something that can be handled at the account layer rather than through a hard fork. The team also drew a line between Starknet’s current architecture and any longer-term redesign. As an Ethereum layer 2, Starknet said its settlement, data publication, and cross-chain bridge still depend on Ethereum and elliptic curve cryptography. It added that research into an independent layer 1 could allow Starknet to set its own cryptographic standards and migration timeline. For now, Starknet said an independent L1 remains only a research direction. It also stated that STRK remains the native token and that there are no plans to issue a new token. Any decision to migrate to an L1, according to the project, would require a binding governance vote.

Starknet said in a post on X that account abstraction allows an account to change its signature verification logic without altering its address, balance, or transaction history, making a move to post-quantum signature schemes possible without changing the protocol.

The project said that, as an Ethereum layer 2 network, its settlement, data publication, and cross-chain bridge still rely on Ethereum and elliptic curve cryptography. It added that research into an independent layer 1 could let Starknet set its own cryptographic approach and migration schedule.

Starknet also said an independent L1 is still only a research direction. STRK remains the native token, and there are currently no plans to issue a new token. Any decision to migrate to an L1 would need to go through a binding governance vote.
