Strategy Inc. asserts that even if Bitcoin plunges to $8,000, its assets would still cover all debt. CEO Phong Le suggests selling Bitcoin only if the price stays that low for five years, highlighting a fortress balance sheet and long-term accumulation approach.

Strategy Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR), the world's largest Bitcoin treasury company, declared on X (formerly Twitter) on February 15 that it can withstand a Bitcoin price drop to $8,000 and still maintain sufficient assets to fully cover its outstanding debt. The announcement underlines the firm's aggressive accumulation strategy and what its leadership calls a "fortress balance sheet."

Stress Test Shows 1.0x Coverage at $8,000 Bitcoin

An accompanying chart illustrated the debt coverage at various Bitcoin prices. At $69,000 per Bitcoin, Strategy holds approximately $49.3 billion in Bitcoin reserves against $6.0 billion in net debt, representing an 8.3x coverage ratio. In a severe 88% drawdown to $8,000 per Bitcoin, the reserves would still total roughly $6.0 billion, exactly matching net debt and implying 1.0x coverage. The company emphasized that its convertible debt notes have staggered maturities and put dates between 2027 and 2032, and it plans to equitize existing convertible debt over time while avoiding additional senior debt issuance.

CEO Addresses $17 Billion Unrealized Loss

During a CNBC interview last week, CEO Phong Le addressed the company's $17 billion quarterly unrealized loss, categorizing it as a mark-to-market accounting impact under GAAP rather than a cash shortfall. "My message is to hold on. We've been through Bitcoin downturns in the past," he said, referencing prior 50% to 75% drawdowns. Le added, "If Bitcoin goes down to $8,000 for 5 years, maybe then we start to have issues around whether we need to sell Bitcoin, but the GAAP loss isn't really something we're concerned about."

He further highlighted the company's approximately $2.25 billion in cash and 10% to 12% leverage, describing the position as a "fortress balance sheet." Executive Chairman Michael Saylor reiterated a long-term accumulation approach, reinforcing confidence in the crypto-heavy treasury model.

Market Reaction and Broader Implications

The statement is widely seen as a confidence-building measure in a volatile crypto market. By voluntarily disclosing stress test results, Strategy aims to reassure investors of its solvency even under extreme scenarios. Currently trading near $68,000, Bitcoin remains far above the $8,000 threshold, making such a drop highly improbable barring a catastrophic event. However, the admission also sets a clear line for when selling might be considered, providing transparency to stakeholders. Strategy, which began its Bitcoin buying spree in 2020, remains the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, and its stock ($MSTR) is highly correlated with Bitcoin's price performance.
