Strategy Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR), the world’s largest bitcoin treasury company, announced on social media platform X on Feb. 15 that it can endure a decline in bitcoin’s price to $8,000 while maintaining sufficient assets to fully cover its outstanding debt. The firm’s disclosure provides a detailed stress test of its fortress balance sheet, reinforcing long-term investor confidence in its aggressive accumulation strategy.
Extreme Stress Test: Solvency at $8,000 Bitcoin
According to an accompanying chart, at a bitcoin price of $69,000, Strategy holds approximately $49.3 billion in bitcoin reserves against $6.0 billion in net debt, reflecting an 8.3x coverage ratio. Under an extreme 88% decline to $8,000 per bitcoin, reserves would still total roughly $6.0 billion, matching net debt and implying 1.0x coverage. The company stated: “Convertible Debt Notes have staggered maturities & put dates between 2027-32. Strategy plans to equitize existing convertible debt over time and avoid issuing additional senior debt.”
CEO on $17 Billion Loss: Accounting Impact, Not Cash Shortfall
During a CNBC interview last week, CEO Phong Le addressed the company’s $17 billion unrealized quarterly loss. “My message is to hold on. We’ve been through bitcoin downturns in the past,” he said, referencing prior drawdowns of 50% to 75%. Le characterized the loss as a GAAP mark-to-market accounting impact rather than a cash shortfall. “If bitcoin goes down to $8,000 for 5 years, maybe then we start to have issues around whether we need to sell bitcoin, but the GAAP loss isn’t really something we’re concerned about,” he added. Le also highlighted approximately $2.25 billion in cash and 10% to 12% leverage, describing the company’s position as a “fortress balance sheet.” Executive Chairman Michael Saylor reiterated a long-term accumulation approach, signaling unwavering commitment to bitcoin as a core treasury asset.
Market Implications and Outlook
Strategy’s latest communication aims to reassure investors amid bitcoin volatility and growing scrutiny of leveraged corporate crypto holdings. The company’s use of low-interest convertible notes to finance bitcoin purchases generated massive paper gains during bullish phases, but the 2025-2026 market correction has flipped those gains into unrealized losses. However, with staggered debt maturities extending through 2032 and ample cash reserves, the risk of forced liquidation remains low. The scenario of sustained $8,000 bitcoin for five years—cited by Le as a potential trigger for selling—is widely considered extreme and improbable. Market participants will continue to monitor bitcoin price action and Strategy’s balance sheet management for clues on the sustainability of its bitcoin-heavy treasury model.
