Strategy Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR), the corporate bitcoin treasury juggernaut, disclosed the acquisition of 34,164 bitcoins for approximately $2.54 billion on April 20, 2026, with an average price of $74,395 per coin. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor noted that the latest purchase pushed the firm’s year-to-date bitcoin yield to 9.5%. The company now holds a total of 815,061 BTC, valued at roughly $58.7 billion.
STRC Preferred Stock: A Superior Capital-Raising Tool
The buying spree is primarily fueled by Strategy’s innovative STRC (Stretch) preferred stock program, which pays an 11.5% monthly dividend yield to holders. This structure allows the company to raise capital without selling its existing bitcoin hoard. Since January 2025, Strategy has executed 57 separate acquisitions, accumulating a total of 367,593 BTC over sixteen months.
Data from bitcoin investment platform River reveals that the STRC program alone has purchased roughly 77,000 BTC so far in 2026. In stark contrast, all U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs combined have seen net inflows of only 8,000 BTC during the same period. River commented on X: “STRC has bought 10X more bitcoin than all ETFs so far in 2026.”
Path to 1 Million Bitcoin: Feasible Within 2026
With 815,061 BTC already in its treasury, Strategy needs an additional 184,939 coins to reach the 1 million milestone. Based on its historical acquisition rate of roughly 774 BTC per day (averaged over the past 57 purchases), the company is projected to hit 1,000,000 BTC around December 15, 2026. While actual purchases tend to occur in large bursts tied to financing windows, the consistent pace makes the target realistic within the calendar year.
Notably, Strategy treats its bitcoin as a permanent reserve asset and has never signaled any intention to sell—even when BTC prices dip below its average cost basis. This contrasts sharply with ETFs, which can experience rapid outflows during market downturns. The company’s “buy and hold” strategy ensures that its buying pressure is permanently absorbed by the market. The continued path to a million bitcoin depends on sustained demand for the STRC instrument and steady access to capital markets—both of which remain robust as of April 2026.
