Strategy Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR) reported a staggering $12.54 billion net loss for the first quarter of 2026, as unrealized losses on its massive bitcoin holdings overwhelmed revenue growth. The results, released on May 5, underscore the volatility inherent in the company's bitcoin treasury strategy.
Record Bitcoin Holdings and Financing Expansion
As of May 3, Strategy held 818,334 bitcoins with an original cost basis of $61.81 billion and a market value of $64.14 billion. The company continued to finance its bitcoin purchases through capital markets, raising $7.37 billion via at-the-market offerings in Q1 and an additional $4.32 billion from April 1 through May 3. Its perpetual preferred stock, STRC, traded at $99.96 with an 11.50% yield and $8.54 billion in notional value, averaging $381.1 million in daily trading volume. CEO Phong Le noted, "Adoption of bitcoin continues to grow in 2026. Digital Credit, highlighted by STRC, has been a big success."
Earnings Volatility Exposed by Unrealized Bitcoin Losses
Revenue rose 11.9% year-over-year to $124.3 million, but operating losses reached $14.47 billion, driven primarily by a $14.46 billion unrealized loss on digital assets. The company reported a 9.4% BTC yield, a gain of 63,410 BTC, and a $4.97 billion BTC dollar gain year-to-date, cautioning that these are not traditional performance measures. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor stated, "By extracting bitcoin's performance and engineering price stability, we have produced a credit instrument with a 2.53 Sharpe ratio." Strategy also proposed moving STRC dividend payments to a semi-monthly schedule. The model is clear: expanding bitcoin exposure comes with rising earnings volatility.
Market Focus Shifts to Balance Sheet Exposure
Prior to the earnings report, Strategy paused its weekly bitcoin purchases after 108 total acquisitions, shifting market attention to its massive 818,334 BTC holdings. Analysts warn that while the financing machine remains strong, further bitcoin price declines could exacerbate unrealized losses and pressure future quarterly results. Investors tracking Strategy as a bitcoin proxy must now weigh the treasury strategy's long-term potential against short-term balance sheet risks.
