Shepard Fairey, the iconic contemporary street artist and activist, is making his debut in the non-fungible token (NFT) ecosystem with a digital mural titled Obey Ideal Power, to be auctioned on the Superrare marketplace on March 29, 2021. The sale is certified by Verisart and will feature alongside works by nine other leading artists, including Neïl Beloufa and Petra Cortright. A fraction of the proceeds will be donated to Amnesty International, the global human rights nonprofit.
From Street Art to Blockchain: Fairey’s NFT First
Fairey rose to fame with his 'Andre the Giant Has a Posse' sticker campaign and the iconic Obey clothing brand, later creating the legendary Barack Obama 'Hope' poster in 2008. Now, the artist featured in a film with the elusive Banksy is leveraging NFTs to expand his artistic and activist reach. 'Art has power,' Fairey stated. 'I’m interested in using art to raise awareness for the important political and social issues of our time.' He believes NFTs offer a decentralized platform that empowers creators and directly connects them with collectors, bypassing traditional gatekeepers.
The Obey Ideal Power mural explores different incarnations of power—ranging from destructive forces that harm the environment and democracy to uplifting ones that foster equality, peace, and harmony with nature. 'For me, ideal power does not destroy the environment or corrupt democracy, but uplifts the oppressed, expands equality, cultivates peace, honors truth, and works in harmony with nature,' Fairey explained. The NFT will be minted as an ERC-721 token, with bidding set to open on Superrare. While the reserve price has not been disclosed, similar high-profile NFTs on the platform have recently sold for tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Activism Meets Digital Art: Donating to Amnesty International
Fairey distinguishes his NFT by embedding a charitable component. He will donate a portion of the auction proceeds to Amnesty International to support its human rights initiatives. 'Using the Fair Trade art certificate for my inaugural NFT sale, collectors will know what charitable cause the work supports,' Fairey noted. This certification, provided by Verisart, adds a layer of transparency and social accountability to the digital asset.
Fairey joins a growing list of celebrities entering the NFT space, including Patrick Mahomes, Lindsay Lohan, Rob Gronkowski, Lil Pump, and Ozuna. On March 23, Crypto.com launched its NFT marketplace with stars like Lionel Ritchie, Snoop Dogg, and Boy George. However, Fairey’s entry carries unique cultural weight—he merges street art’s rebellious spirit with blockchain’s decentralized ethos, potentially shifting the NFT market from mere celebrity hype to meaningful artistic and social commentary.
Market interest appears strong. Several users on Superrare have already expressed intent to bid. Analysts predict that Fairey’s massive fan base, combined with the piece’s activist narrative, could drive significant demand. As more traditional artists cross into the NFT realm, the boundaries of digital art collecting continue to expand.
