SWIFT has finalized its long-awaited migration from traditional MT messages to the ISO 20022 MX format for financial institution payments, completing the transition over the weekend. The upgrade aims to bring greater precision, richer data structure, and enhanced automation to cross-border transactions.
Banks Required to Upgrade Systems
With the new standard in place, banks worldwide must update their systems to accommodate the highly structured data format. ISO 20022 enables the inclusion of detailed payer and payee information, remittance data, and purpose codes, which significantly improves anti-money laundering (AML) screening and facilitates straight-through processing (STP), reducing manual errors and delays.
Crypto Assets Rally on Compatibility
The adoption of ISO 20022 has sparked renewed interest in distributed ledger technology (DLT) networks that are natively compatible with the standard, particularly Ripple (XRP) and Stellar (XLM). These networks offer compliant, interoperable settlement solutions that align with the new global payment framework, positioning themselves as potential complements or alternatives to SWIFT’s legacy infrastructure.
Market reaction was immediate: XLM surged 2.77% in the last 24 hours, while XRP gained 0.93%. Other ISO 20022-compliant tokens such as HBAR and ADA also saw positive momentum.
