The Swiss municipality of Chiasso has announced that it will accept tax payments in bitcoin starting from January 2018, with an initial cap of 250 Swiss francs (CHF) per transaction. This move positions Chiasso as a direct competitor to Zug, the home of Switzerland's famous "Crypto Valley," which already permits up to 200 CHF in bitcoin tax payments and has processed over 40 Bitcoin transactions since July 2017.
Chiasso's Crypto-Friendly Tax Policy
Mayor Bruno Arrigoni stated that the initiative aims to revitalize the local economy following the decline of the traditional banking sector. "Chiasso is recognized internationally as an epicenter of growing technological and economic growth for both the canton and Switzerland," Arrigoni said. The city plans to initially limit Bitcoin tax payments to 250 CHF as a trial, with the possibility of increasing the limit later based on demand.
Attracting Blockchain Startups
In recent months, Arrigoni has met with multiple cryptocurrency entrepreneurs, and at least eight startups have already established headquarters in the municipality. The local government is also evaluating participation as a founding partner in a new non-profit BHB foundation focused on blockchain and Bitcoin technology. To foster long-term innovation, Chiasso will introduce in-depth cryptocurrency courses in upper secondary schools to improve digital asset literacy among young people. The municipality has branded itself as "CryptoPolis" to attract blockchain talent and companies.
Rivalry with Zug's Crypto Valley
Zug has long been the epicenter of Swiss crypto innovation, hosting the Ethereum Foundation and numerous ICOs. Chiasso, located near the Italian border, hopes its lower tax rates and proactive government support can lure some of that activity. While federal regulation in Switzerland remains limited, individual cantons and municipalities are free to experiment. The success of Chiasso's bitcoin tax initiative could encourage other Swiss cities to follow suit, further cementing Switzerland's reputation as a global hub for cryptocurrency adoption.
