$2 Billion Private Fundraise Led by a16z
Data center operator Switch has officially announced a $2 billion private fundraise, with a16z (Andreessen Horowitz) leading the round with an estimated $400 million investment. According to sources familiar with the matter, the company's enterprise valuation, including debt, could reach approximately $50 billion post-funding, while equity value stands at around $19 billion (excluding the new capital). Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan are also assisting in the fundraising process. Negotiations remain ongoing, meaning the final size, valuation, and timing could still change.
Paving the Way for 2026 IPO
The fundraise is widely seen as a preparatory step for Switch's potential initial public offering as early as next year. Data centers serve as critical infrastructure for cryptocurrency mining, AI training, and blockchain node operation. Switch operates facilities in Nevada, Michigan, Georgia, and Texas, serving both large tech enterprises and crypto miners. a16z's significant bet on Switch underscores the venture firm's confidence in compute-heavy infrastructure, a sector increasingly intertwined with both crypto and AI growth.
From Privatization to Refinancing: Switch's Capital Journey
Headquartered in Las Vegas and founded in 2000, Switch is majority-owned by DigitalBridge. In 2022, DigitalBridge, along with IFM Investors and other parties, took Switch private in a deal valued at approximately $11 billion (including debt). Just three years later, Switch's valuation has surged to nearly $50 billion, reflecting the scarcity and explosive demand for data center assets. A successful IPO would mark one of the largest data center listings in recent years, further fueling investment in crypto and AI infrastructure.
