As the AI agent economy expands rapidly, traditional payment infrastructures face new challenges. On July 11, Tempo Chain, a blockchain developed by Commonware, officially launched to address the unique payment needs of AI agents. The project jointly designed the Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) with Stripe, enabling autonomous payments without human intervention — described as "OAuth for payments."

Tempo Chain: A Payment-Optimized Blockchain

Tempo Chain leverages the Simplex BFT pipeline consensus to achieve sub-second finality and is deeply optimized for payment scenarios. It allocates dedicated block space for payment transactions and introduces a native stablecoin gas mechanism to prioritize payments. Unlike general-purpose blockchains, Tempo supports parallel transaction execution and is natively designed for stablecoins, reducing latency and cost.

Transaction fees on Tempo are as low as $0.001 per transaction, making it viable for high-frequency micropayments. Use cases include cross-border payments and 24/7 settlement of tokenized deposits, providing real-time, low-cost fund transfers for AI agents.

MPP Protocol: A Standard for AI Agent Payments

The Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), co-developed with Stripe, establishes a standardized authorization framework for AI agent payments. Similar to OAuth, MPP allows AI agents to initiate payments autonomously after pre-authorization, eliminating the need for manual approval for each transaction. This is critical for AI agents performing complex tasks, such as automatically purchasing cloud computing resources, paying API call fees, or settling digital content licenses.

According to recent data, AI agent payments have reached $73 million, with USDC dominating the space. Coinbase CEO previously predicted that the AI economy would surpass the human economy. With trends like Sui Network introducing gasless stablecoin transfers and Railway reaching 3 million users, the AI payment sector is becoming one of the most active innovation frontiers in crypto.
