Tether has announced a $150 million strategic investment in precious metals platform Gold.com, acquiring roughly a 12% stake to broaden the global reach of its tokenized gold product XAU₮. In tandem, Gold.com agreed to invest $20 million of the proceeds into XAU₮, aligning both companies' interests.
$150M for a board seat and equity stake
Under the deal, Tether will purchase about 3.37 million common shares at a discount to recent market prices and will be entitled to nominate a board member. The partners also plan to explore commercial arrangements, including promoting Tether's stablecoins (USD₮, USA₮) on Gold.com's platform and enabling gold purchases with those stablecoins.
Gold.com pledges $20M into XAU₮
Gold.com will deploy $20 million from the investment to buy XAU₮, Tether's gold-backed digital asset pegged to physical bullion held in reserve. XAU₮ already ranks among the largest tokenized gold stablecoins by market share, and the investment bolsters its global credibility and distribution.
XAU₮: one of the largest tokenized gold stablecoins
Tether's XAU₮ maintains a 1:1 peg with physical gold stored in Swiss vaults. The token circulates on multiple blockchains, offering investors low-barrier exposure to gold. Unlike physical bars, XAU₮ supports instant transfer and fractionalization.
Tether adds over a ton of gold weekly to Swiss vaults
“Our investment in Gold.com reflects a long-term belief that gold should be as accessible, transferable, and usable as modern digital money, without compromising on physical backing or ownership,” said Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino. Tether has steadily accumulated bullion in secure Swiss vaults, buying more than a ton of gold each week. It now holds approximately 140 tons of physical gold valued at about $23 billion.
Gold.com's 60+ year legacy pivots to crypto
Founded in 1965, Gold.com is a vertically integrated alternative assets platform covering precious metals, numismatic coins, and collectibles across U.S. and international markets. CEO Greg Roberts said the investment “builds upon Gold.com's 60+ year legacy and expands our reach beyond traditional bullion into digital gold and stablecoins,” adding that capital will strengthen offerings and support innovation.
Tokenization of real-world assets gains steam
The deal reflects a broader wave of real-world asset tokenization, as investors and issuers increasingly seek to merge physical commodities with blockchain-based financial infrastructure. Tether's latest move once again ties stablecoins to tangible assets, bridging traditional bullion markets with the crypto world.
