Tether, the issuer of the world's largest stablecoin USDT (market cap ~$140 billion), has provided further details about its ambitious construction project in El Salvador: a 70-story skyscraper dubbed Tether Tower. CEO Paolo Ardoino shared the plans with local media, emphasizing the building as a testament to the company's commitment to the country's crypto-driven future.
A Tower for the Crypto Ecosystem
Ardoino clarified that Tether Tower will not be solely occupied by Tether. It will serve as a hub for other technology and cryptocurrency companies that follow Tether's lead. “I think it is important to invest in infrastructure here. The tower will be a symbol of prosperity and growth of the country,” Ardoino stated. He stressed that Tether does not place its logo on just any building, implying the strategic importance of this landmark.
The 70-story height was chosen to accommodate not only Tether's own operations but also the growing ecosystem of partner companies. “We are here to invest in the country. The tower is an example, but we want to hire a lot of people, because the tower has to be filled with people. We are already hiring to help us with compliance issues and technology departments,” Ardoino added.
Rumble and Other Affiliates Joining
Rumble, a video platform backed by Tether, is also planning to open offices in El Salvador and begin local hiring. The company recently signed an agreement with the Salvadoran government to provide cloud computing services. This move underscores how Tether is leveraging its influence to bring affiliated businesses into the country, creating a mini crypto-tech cluster.
Why El Salvador?
Ardoino praised President Nayib Bukele's leadership and the regulatory environment. “We need stability and an adequate regulatory framework, and El Salvador is one of the few countries that has truly understood the potential of digital assets,” he said. He went further: “It is the country of the future. I believe that El Salvador and Latin America will be one of the main spaces for the world’s future. Europe is in decline.”
Tether relocated its headquarters to El Salvador after receiving a stablecoin issuer license in 2024. The construction of Tether Tower is a physical manifestation of the company's long-term bet on the nation's Bitcoin adoption and economic transformation. As other crypto firms watch closely, El Salvador continues to position itself as a global hub for digital assets.
