Tether has invested $20 million in Brazilian digital asset platform Mercado Bitcoin to accelerate the expansion of onchain financial infrastructure across Latin America. The strategic financing will help scale tokenization, payments, lending, and capital markets while strengthening Mercado Bitcoin's position in one of the region's fastest-growing crypto markets.
This move underscores Tether's commitment to blockchain-based financial services beyond stablecoin issuance. For Mercado Bitcoin, the injection also speeds its shift from a cryptocurrency exchange into a broader digital financial platform.
Mercado Bitcoin confirmed it will direct the new funding toward expanding payments infrastructure, launching more tokenized investment products, and growing its lending and credit operations. The company also aims to strengthen its onchain capital markets business as demand for blockchain-based financial products rises across Latin America.
Mercado Bitcoin's Growth Trajectory
Founded in 2013 as a crypto exchange, Mercado Bitcoin now offers tokenized investments, stablecoin payments, cross-border banking, and digital credit solutions. The platform serves roughly 4.5 million users and has issued over $370 million in tokenized assets. It holds more than ten regulatory licenses in Brazil and Europe, enabling regulated digital financial services.
The new capital is expected to strengthen infrastructure and drive broader adoption of tokenized products. Mercado Bitcoin aims to increase access to blockchain-powered services for both retail and institutional customers throughout the region.
Tether's Brazil Push: PIX Integration
Tether has also deepened its Brazil presence through payments. Last month, its backed payments app Oobit integrated Brazil's PIX instant payment network. Users can deposit Brazilian reais, convert funds into USDT, and make payments via PIX, which serves about 170 million users.
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said the company's mission is to build open, accessible, and efficient global financial infrastructure. He noted the investment aligns with that goal while supporting wider access to blockchain-based services.
Brazil remains one of the world's most active digital asset markets, making it a key destination for companies expanding blockchain infrastructure. Tether's latest investment reinforces its long-term commitment to regulated financial innovation across Latin America.
