Tether Investments has placed a strategic bet on LayerZero Labs, the team that built one of the most widely deployed cross-chain bridging protocols in crypto. The move signals Tether's shift toward proven, production-ready interoperability infrastructure rather than theoretical solutions.
$70B Cross-Chain Milestone Validates the Tech
Within the past 12 months, Everdawn Labs launched USDt0 and XAUt0 on top of LayerZero's framework. USDt0 alone processed more than $70 billion in cross-chain value transfers. That real-world data confirms LayerZero's network can handle stablecoin and tokenized asset flows at scale without causing liquidity fragmentation—a key concern in multi-chain environments.
The Omnichain Fungible Token standard plays a central role here, ensuring assets remain fungible across different blockchains so users don't need to manually bridge between networks.
WDK Integration Unlocks AI Wallet Autonomy
Tether is merging its Wallet Development Kit (WDK) with LayerZero's interoperability layer. This combination targets two use cases: frictionless cross-chain payments, settlements and custody for real-world applications; and agentic finance, where AI wallets autonomously execute stablecoin and digital asset transactions. Tether claims the architecture can handle tens of thousands of micro-transactions simultaneously, bypassing single-chain throughput limits.
CEOs on the Strategic Fit
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said: "LayerZero Labs has built interoperability technology that allows digital assets to be transferred in real-time across any transport layer and distributed ledger." He added that the investment aims to solidify digital assets as global settlement instruments.
LayerZero CEO Bryan Pellegrino called the USDt0 milestone "an important stepping stone," noting that "having Tether deepen its commitment with this investment is the ultimate validation." Both sides emphasized reducing chain fragmentation and improving liquidity efficiency, so stablecoins can flow seamlessly across heterogeneous blockchain networks.
LayerZero currently connects over 30 blockchains, including EVM, non-EVM and Cosmos ecosystems. Tether's capital injection could accelerate expansion to more chains, while also providing deeper protocol-level support for USDT cross-chain transfers.
