Tether is expanding its Bitcoin mining infrastructure with modular compute systems co-developed with Canaan Inc. and ACME Swisstech. The company disclosed the move recently, focusing on redesigning hardware architecture to improve energy control, lower costs, and boost performance across large mining operations.
Modular Architecture: Independent Hash Board Upgrades
Instead of traditional sealed mining rigs, Tether builds systems around application-specific hash board modules. These modules integrate into Tether's own control architecture, thermal systems, and software stack. Operators can adjust performance and upgrade individual parts without replacing entire machines—a departure from fixed, sealed units that tie compute, cooling, and firmware together.
The new design separates compute from power supply and enclosure. Each layer can be optimized independently. When paired with immersion cooling, the setup reduces energy overhead and improves operational efficiency noticeably at scale.
Solving the Coordination Problem in Large Mining Farms
Large mining sites currently run thousands of independent units with limited coordination, hindering system-wide optimization. Tether's architecture introduces more centralized control across interconnected systems, boosting overall availability and performance. A single fan failure in a traditional rig could take the whole unit offline; modular design limits the blast radius to the faulty component.
Customized Collaboration with Canaan and ACME
Canaan delivers customized hash board modules through its Avalon platform, optimized for immersion-cooled environments. ACME Swisstech handles thermal and infrastructure integration. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino stated the goal is to redefine mining infrastructure, moving from retail-focused hardware to industrial-scale solutions. Canaan CEO Nangeng Zhang noted the modules enable flexible deployment and higher efficiency in immersion cooling. Tether's VP of Engineering Giv Zanganeh emphasized the design shifts away from consumer hardware entirely.
The hardware push extends Tether's earlier open-source Mining OS and Mining SDK. By controlling the full stack from software to silicon, Tether is building a closed but highly manageable mining ecosystem. For large operators, standardized modules combined with custom firmware could sharply reduce recovery time and long-term maintenance costs.
