Tether (USDT) has reached a staggering $140 billion market capitalization, making up 3.75% of the $3.73 trillion crypto universe as of Dec. 16, 2024. Within the $208 billion stablecoin sector, USDT commands a dominant 67.31% share, cementing its role as the backbone of crypto trading liquidity.

Tether Supply Surges $50B in a Year

One year ago, USDT's supply stood at 90 billion tokens. In just 12 months, it ballooned by 55.6% to 140 billion. The pace accelerated recently: the last 40 days alone saw an addition of 20 billion USDT. Currently, 76.92 billion USDT reside on Ethereum (54.94% of circulating supply), while 61.75 billion are on Tron. The remainder is distributed across several other blockchains, a shift from earlier dominance on Omni and then a temporary Tron preference in early 2024.

Ethereum Reclaims Issuance Crown

After Tron briefly became the favored network for new USDT issuance in the first half of 2024, Ethereum has now taken back the lead. As of mid-December, Ethereum hosts 54.94% of all circulating USDT, reflecting its continued appeal for institutional-grade stablecoin transactions. This resurgence underscores Ethereum's role as the primary settlement layer for the largest stablecoin by market cap.

Competitors Surge, But USDT Stays on Top

While USDT added 10.4% to its supply in December, rivals are growing faster. Circle's USDC rose 15.3%, and Ethena's yield-bearing stablecoin USDE skyrocketed 87.1%. Ethena also launched a new stablecoin backed by BlackRock's BUIDL assets this month. Despite these growth spurts, USDT's 67.31% stablecoin market share remains unassailable. However, new entrants like Ripple's forthcoming fiat-pegged coin could intensify competition.

Outlook and Cautionary Note

The impressive numbers come with caveats: supply growth does not guarantee stability or value retention. The crypto market's inherent volatility, coupled with emerging challengers, raises the question of whether USDT can maintain its throne. While Tether appears unshakable today, the fast-evolving stablecoin landscape suggests that no player is immune to disruption. Investors should remain vigilant about risks.
