Turkey's cryptocurrency landscape has been shaken by the death of Faruk Fatih Özer, the founder of the now-defunct exchange Thodex, who was found dead in his cell at Tekirdağ No. 1 F Type High Security Closed Penal Institution on November 1, 2025. According to Turkey's national public broadcaster TRT, Özer was discovered hanging from a bedsheet attached to his bathroom door. The Tekirdağ Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation, and his body has been sent to the Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy.

From Tech Prodigy to Fugitive

Özer rose to fame as a young tech entrepreneur when he founded Thodex in 2017 with a capital of 400,000 Turkish liras (approximately $50,000 at the time). The exchange quickly attracted over 400,000 users by promising high returns on digital asset trading, becoming one of Turkey's largest platforms. In April 2021, Thodex abruptly halted withdrawals, and Özer fled to Albania with an estimated billions of dollars in investor funds. The Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office later alleged that the platform had deceived investors through fake digital asset transactions, marking what is widely considered the largest financial fraud in Turkish history.

Legal Saga Ends in Tragedy

After an international manhunt, Özer was arrested in Albania on August 30, 2022, and extradited to Turkey in April 2023. In September 2023, the Anatolian 9th High Criminal Court sentenced him to 11,196 years in prison on charges of forming and managing a criminal organization, qualified fraud, and money laundering. However, the Istanbul Regional Court of Justice later overturned the conviction for forming a criminal organization, while keeping him detained on other charges. A retrial involving 21 defendants was still ongoing at the time of his death. Prosecutors had originally sought sentences ranging from 12,164 to 40,562 years for the defendants, reflecting the massive scale of the fraud.

Investor Reactions and Regulatory Implications

Özer's death has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger crypto regulations in Turkey, a country with one of the highest cryptocurrency adoption rates in the world. Many victims of the Thodex collapse expressed frustration on social media, fearing that the founder's death might hinder recovery efforts. Legal experts note that while the case against remaining defendants will continue, Özer's sudden death could make it harder to trace hidden assets. The scandal has exposed systemic risks in unregulated exchanges and highlighted the vulnerability of retail investors. Analysts predict that Turkey's government, which has already banned crypto payments, may now accelerate the introduction of comprehensive crypto licensing and supervision laws to restore investor confidence and prevent similar frauds in the future.

What's Next?

Despite the shocking turn of events, the Thodex case is far from over. Prosecutors have confirmed that they will pursue the retrial of the 20 other defendants. Meanwhile, Turkish authorities are expected to increase scrutiny on all crypto trading platforms operating in the country. The death of Faruk Fatih Özer serves as a grim reminder of the risks inherent in unregulated digital asset markets and the urgent need for robust investor protections worldwide.
