Threshold Network has completed a major protocol upgrade, unveiling a redesigned website and dApp to strengthen tBTC's role in Bitcoin onchain markets. The key feature: users can now mint tBTC directly to supported chains—Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, Sui, Starknet, BOB, and Optimism—using a single Bitcoin transaction, without secondary signatures or gas fees.
Onchain data shows over 157,000 Bitcoin addresses hold more than $1 million, and 19,142 hold over $10 million. Institutional participation has surged since U.S. spot ETF approvals in 2024, with institutional holdings reaching $414 billion by August 2025. Threshold positions this upgrade as the infrastructure to capture that capital migrating onchain.
From Single Protocol to Full Ecosystem
The revamped website adopts a clean, minimal layout for clarity and accessibility. The dApp has been rebuilt to deliver a unified experience: users mint tBTC directly to the target chain and redeem back to Bitcoin mainnet with equal simplicity, all while maintaining full decentralization with no custodians.
New features include an Explore section for discovering tBTC integrations across DeFi protocols, a Vaults dashboard aggregating curated vault strategies, and a History page logging every mint, redeem, and vault action onchain.
Gasless Minting Removes Friction
On supported networks, gasless minting allows users to deposit Bitcoin, connect their wallet, and send to a single-use address to receive tBTC on the chosen chain—no wallet signatures or additional fees required. This eliminates traditional friction in bringing Bitcoin into DeFi, enabling efficient capital flow into yield strategies, lending markets, and liquidity pools.
“This is a major protocol upgrade that represents Threshold’s maturity as a network,” said the Co-Founder and CPO of Threshold Labs. “We’ve rebuilt the app to give users a unified experience. Mint, redeem, and deploy Bitcoin faster, with confidence and transparency.”
“The scale of institutional adoption since ETF approvals has been extraordinary,” said MacLane Wilkison, Co-Founder and CEO of Threshold Labs. “Our focus is on building the infrastructure that allows institutions, funds, and corporates to interact with Bitcoin onchain securely. As traditional finance integrates Bitcoin into its portfolios, tBTC stands as the bridge that ensures this participation remains decentralized and transparent.”
tBTC is already live on major ecosystems including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, Sui, Starknet, BOB, and Optimism. Backed by Threshold Network's 51-of-100 threshold signer model with over 5 years of proven security and approximately $4.8B in bridge volume, the upgrade aims to make Bitcoin native to DeFi without compromising trust or custody.
