Ticketmaster, the world's leading event ticketing provider, has launched a token-gated sales service that lets fans unlock concert ticket access using non-fungible token (NFT) technology. The first act to trial the service is the metal band Avenged Sevenfold (A7X), whose Deathbats Club NFT collection granted holders early access to the group's shows in Los Angeles and New York City. Following the ticket sales, Ticketmaster announced on March 27, 2023, that it had built and deployed the token-gated service specifically for A7X's upcoming performances.
How Token-Gated Sales Work
In a press statement, Ticketmaster explained: “Building on its NFT capabilities, Ticketmaster has launched the ability for artists to offer token-gated ticket sales – meaning that a sale can only be unlocked or accessed with a specific NFT.” The company collaborated with A7X and the blockchain team Bitflips to develop the functionality. David Marcus, EVP of Global Music at Ticketmaster, stated that the new service “allows artists to get special access and rewards to specific fans they want to super-serve.” He added that artists like Avenged Sevenfold are leveraging Web3 and NFTs to foster deeper fan relationships, and Ticketmaster is proud to enable that connection through live events.
A7X's NFT Community Takes Center Stage
Avenged Sevenfold previously released the “Deathbats Club” NFT collection, and those digital tokens serve as the key to exclusive presales. The band has been a pioneer in using NFTs beyond simple collectibles, integrating them into fan engagement strategies. Ticketmaster noted that the token-gated service is Ethereum-compatible and works with Web3 wallets such as MetaMask and Coinbase Wallet. This marks a significant step for Ticketmaster, which first revealed its exploration of blockchain-based ticketing in August 2022 when it announced a partnership with the Flow blockchain.
Implications for the Live Events Industry
Ticketmaster described the token-gated sales as one of several “tech solutions that artists can use to get their tickets to their fans.” By enabling artists to reward their most dedicated followers with early access, the platform opens new possibilities for direct fan engagement and secondary market control. However, the move also raises questions about market accessibility, privacy, and regulatory compliance. Some analysts view this as a step toward mainstream adoption of NFTs as utility tokens rather than speculative assets. While still early, the collaboration between Ticketmaster and Avenged Sevenfold could set a precedent for how concerts and events manage access in the Web3 era.
