Full Text of the Memo
Cook wrote: "Colleagues, today is my last day as Apple's CEO. I always knew this day would come, but even so, I can't believe it's here. I'm sitting here writing these words. I love this company, I love the team behind it, and I couldn't let this day pass without writing to you to express my deep appreciation for the care you've shown me, for your daily efforts, and most importantly, for giving me the opportunity to lead."
He continued: "Whatever I have achieved, I know it is all because of you. You bring out the best in me. In my life, I have never seen or worked with a team as extraordinary as this one, and every day I see more examples."
Cook emphasized Apple's unique culture: "Apple has a truly special magic. What I am most proud of is what the annual report can never show. This is proof that culture is stronger than anything. We share a belief that what we create matters, and we have the opportunity and responsibility to make the world better. That sense of mission defines Apple."
He noted that he is not leaving Apple: "As you know, I am not leaving Apple. But I am leaving a role I love. I will miss this job more than words can say, but I am at peace with my decision. I will miss leading you and being by your side every step, and I am incredibly relieved to hand over leadership to someone as talented and capable as John."
Cook concluded: "I hope you know how grateful I am. Being your CEO has been an honor. Above all, I hope you continue to be proud of being part of this extraordinary team and always give your best. When we fully commit to our work, care for each other, and care for the users we serve, the impact we can create is limitless. I look forward to seeing you at Apple Park and around the world. Handover to Ternus: Engineering DNA
Cook expressed strong confidence in his successor, John Ternus. "Few people understand what it takes to build products that change the world like John does. I am incredibly excited about his leadership," Cook wrote.
Ternus joined Apple's product design team in 2001 and became senior vice president of hardware engineering in January 2021. His engineering background contrasts with Cook's supply chain expertise. His first major event as CEO will be the September 9 product launch, codenamed "Surprise and Shine."
