The Open Network (TON) Foundation, the organization dedicated to fostering initiatives on the TON blockchain, announced on Tuesday a strategic partnership with Tether, the issuer of the world's largest dollar-pegged stablecoin USDT. The collaboration aims to significantly widen access to USDT on the TON network, making it available to users across the globe through a broad network of exchanges and payment processors.

Plan to Integrate with 100+ Exchanges

According to a press release, the TON Foundation has outlined plans to complete at least 100 different integrations in both established and emerging markets over the coming months. Several integrations have already been executed in regions including Africa, Southeast Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America, with more partnerships under discussion. These integrations serve two primary purposes: first, to allow users in each country to easily acquire USDT on TON and enter the TON ecosystem; second, to enable merchants to accept USDT payments for goods and services using the TON network, thereby driving real-world utility.

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, commented on the significance of this move, stating: "Mass adoption, starting from where it matters the most." His remark underscores the focus on regions where stablecoins can have the most immediate impact on financial inclusion and cross-border transactions.

Rapid Growth of USDT on TON

Since its launch on the TON blockchain, USDT has experienced explosive growth. Just two weeks after the stablecoin went live on TON, its market capitalization reached $130 million. As of early May, the supply of USDT on TON had surged to nearly $400 million, more than tripling in less than a month. This rapid adoption has been fueled in part by incentives provided by the TON Foundation, which allocated millions of TON tokens to encourage users to hold and use USDT within Telegram's built-in wallet.

Despite this impressive growth, TON remains far from the blockchain with the largest USDT supply. Tron currently dominates the stablecoin landscape, hosting nearly $59 billion in USDT according to Tether's transparency page. Nevertheless, TON's deep integration with the Telegram messaging app — which has over 900 million monthly active users — positions it as a strong contender in the race to bring stablecoins to mainstream audiences.

Global Coverage and Future Outlook

The TON Foundation's expansion plan covers a diverse range of markets, including Africa, Southeast Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America. By partnering with local exchanges and payment processors, the foundation aims to remove friction from the process of buying, selling, and using USDT on TON. These integrations also facilitate merchant adoption, allowing businesses to accept USDT payments through the TON network, which can significantly reduce transaction costs and settlement times compared to traditional payment rails.

Looking ahead, the TON Foundation remains committed to broadening the ecosystem. With more exchanges and payment gateways expected to join the network, TON is poised to support a wide range of applications, including decentralized finance (DeFi), remittances, and everyday payments. The foundation expressed optimism that the next few months will see a surge in partnerships, bringing USDT on TON to millions of new users around the world.
