TON Mainnet has begun deploying its Sub-Second upgrade, a consensus-layer change aimed at cutting confirmation times and making on-chain applications react faster. The rollout was announced through TON’s official X account on April 2, 2026. At the time of publication, the process was still underway, with full fast-consensus activation scheduled for April 7.

Validator rollout follows a staged activation plan

According to the official announcement, the upgrade moved into launch after a bug bounty phase and now follows a three-step activation plan. Validator nodes were first required to update by March 31. That was followed by an April 2 vote to enable the new consensus on the basechain and moderately increase block production frequency.

A second vote is set for April 7 to fully activate fast consensus on both the basechain and the masterchain. TON also asked validators to stay on heightened operational readiness through April 12 in case deployment issues appear. The process is phased, not instant.

Faster confirmations are meant to improve app responsiveness

TON has previously described its block time as around five seconds while presenting the network as infrastructure for low-fee payments and high-throughput use cases. The Sub-Second upgrade is designed to reduce that latency at the consensus level. That could affect how quickly wallets, payment services, games, DeFi products, and Telegram-linked applications feel in actual use.

In practical terms, the change targets usability. Consumer-facing crypto apps, especially mini apps and payment tools, are often judged by how little waiting they impose. TON’s phased rollout suggests the team is trying to improve performance without losing validator coordination or network stability during the transition.

Market response stays restrained ahead of final activation

Price action has remained measured so far. Toncoin was trading near $1.21, down about 0.32% over the past 24 hours, with daily trading volume around $80.34 million and market capitalization near $3 billion.

That reaction fits how traders usually treat consensus upgrades. Technical milestones matter, but execution, stability, and follow-through in usage tend to matter more before a Layer 1 network is repriced. For now, the next key checkpoint is April 7, when TON plans to complete the final activation step.
