Firo (XZC) launched in September 2016 as the first implementation of the Zerocoin protocol, proposed by Johns Hopkins University professor Matthew D. Green. The coin uses zero-knowledge proofs to break transaction history: users mint a coin, burn it with a mathematical proof, then redeem a new coin with no link to the original. In 2018 the Dandelion protocol was added to hide sender IPs, and the Sigma protocol replaced Zerocoin in 2019, removing trusted setup and improving scalability.
Despite both using zero-knowledge algorithms, Firo and Zcash are built on different research papers (Zerocoin vs. Zerocash) and are not forks of each other.
1. Trust Wallet
Binance's official mobile wallet integrated Firo in February 2019. It supports ERC20, BEP2, and BNB tokens, plus DApp browsing and direct access to Binance DEX for decentralized trading.
2. Coinomi
Available on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux, Coinomi supports over 125 coins and thousands of tokens. Its built-in exchange (via Changelly, Shapeshift, etc.) lets users swap XZC without leaving the app. Coinomi has never been hacked since launch.
3. Firo GUI Wallet
The official desktop wallet was updated after the Sigma release with a cleaner interface and mnemonic backup for Sigma mints. Supported on Linux, Windows, and macOS. Always back up before upgrading.
4. Electrum XZC
A lightweight fork of Electrum BTC, it doesn't require downloading the full blockchain. It can be paired with Ledger hardware wallets: install the Firo app on the Ledger device, then manage XZC via the Electrum interface.
5. Edge
A mobile wallet with over five years of operation, Edge uses client-side encryption and stores no personal data. Backup is done with username and password, plus PIN or Touch ID. It integrates with Changelly and Simplex for in-app swaps, making it beginner-friendly.
6. Ledger
Both Ledger Nano X and Nano S support Firo offline storage. Through Ledger Live, users manage 23 coins and 1,200+ ERC20 tokens. Always purchase hardware from the official Ledger website to avoid tampered devices.
At press time, Firo's market cap stood at $63,039,774, ranking 92nd on CoinMarketCap. The choice between these wallets depends on whether users prioritize mobility, security, or deep privacy features.
