Traditional finance may be misreading one of the most important shifts in digital asset markets. According to Ramp Network co-founder and CEO Przemek Kowalczyk, the next phase of financial infrastructure will be shaped by a combination of native cross-chain swaps, AI-driven automation, and stablecoin-based settlement. In that environment, incumbent financial institutions risk falling behind if they continue to treat stablecoins as a rival product instead of foundational infrastructure.

Kowalczyk’s argument begins with a critique of the architecture that defined much of early decentralized finance interoperability: the third-party bridge, especially the classic “lock-and-mint” model. Under that design, a user who wants to move assets from one blockchain to another locks the original tokens on the source chain, while the bridge issues a wrapped or synthetic version of the asset on the destination chain. Although this approach helped connect fragmented blockchain ecosystems, it also introduced structural weaknesses that became impossible to ignore.

The Security Problem With Lock-and-Mint Bridges

According to Kowalczyk, the issue was never the market demand these bridges served, but the trust assumptions embedded in their design. Lock-and-mint bridges often depend on a relatively small validator set or a tightly coordinated control layer. That creates a large attack surface and concentrates risk in a central vault holding the original assets. If that vault is compromised, the wrapped tokens issued elsewhere can quickly become worthless.

That architectural fragility has been exposed repeatedly across the industry. Kowalczyk points to the broader history of bridge exploits, which have contributed to billions of dollars in losses over recent years. In his view, those incidents were not isolated accidents but symptoms of a flawed model. As the digital asset ecosystem matures, the market is moving away from this bridge-heavy structure toward a more robust standard for interoperability.

That standard is increasingly centered on native, swap-based cross-chain execution. Rather than locking one asset and minting a synthetic representation somewhere else, native swaps allow users to exchange value directly across chains. Liquidity is sourced across multiple networks, and settlement occurs in the destination chain’s native asset. For Kowalczyk, this removes several of the trust dependencies that made earlier bridge systems vulnerable in the first place.

The significance of this change goes beyond user convenience. It reflects a broader effort to build financial rails that are less dependent on centralized chokepoints and synthetic wrappers. In practical terms, it means fewer assumptions about who can be trusted, fewer custodial bottlenecks, and a lower chance that a single failure point will cascade through the system.

AI Agents Are Turning DeFi Into Automated Infrastructure

As the underlying rails improve, the user layer is changing too. Kowalczyk argues that decentralized finance is moving from a manual environment into an automated one, driven by the rise of AI agent frameworks such as Openclaw. What was once experimental is becoming infrastructure, with software agents taking on tasks that previously required constant human monitoring and execution.

These agents can monitor liquidity conditions, rebalance positions, adjust collateral, and route swaps without direct user intervention. For advanced market participants, that promises major efficiency gains. For less technical users, it could reduce the complexity that has long limited DeFi adoption. Instead of manually moving funds, comparing venues, or managing fragmented positions, users may increasingly rely on automated systems operating continuously in the background.

Kowalczyk frames this as a meaningful shift in how decentralized finance functions. Execution becomes more data-driven, continuous, and abstracted away from the user. But he also warns that automation introduces new forms of systemic instability. If multiple AI agents are trained on similar models or react to market conditions in comparable ways, volatility could be amplified rather than dampened.

That makes safeguards essential. He highlights the need for clear permissions, rate limits, and transparent execution logic. In other words, automation can improve market efficiency, but only if the systems controlling capital flows are designed with careful constraints. The technology itself may be neutral, yet its implementation will determine whether it strengthens or destabilizes the ecosystem.

Why Stablecoins Matter to Traditional Finance

For Kowalczyk, the convergence of native swaps and AI automation collides directly with another major force: the rapid spread of stablecoins. This is where his message to traditional finance becomes most explicit. Institutions that still depend on slow, expensive cross-border payment processes should not see stablecoins merely as a new competitor. They should see them as infrastructure capable of modernizing settlement itself.

Stablecoins operate 24/7, reduce settlement times, and can bypass delays embedded in correspondent banking networks. That changes user expectations. Once individuals and businesses experience value moving at any hour and settling in minutes, older payment rails can start to feel functionally obsolete. The challenge for incumbents is not simply defending existing revenue streams, but adapting to a world where speed, programmability, and constant availability become baseline features.

This does not mean all stablecoins will play the same role. Kowalczyk notes that dollar-pegged stablecoins currently dominate the market, reflecting the U.S. dollar’s entrenched position in global trade and reserves. But he argues that this should not automatically frame the market as a winner-takes-all contest between the dollar and every other currency.

Instead, other fiat-linked stablecoins may find strength through regional utility. Euro-denominated stablecoins, for example, could help European companies reduce foreign exchange risk while streamlining payroll, invoicing, and treasury management. In Kowalczyk’s view, USD stablecoins are likely to remain dominant in global trade, while euro stablecoins may expand meaningfully within European economic flows and in markets with deep trade ties to Europe. That creates substantial room for growth without requiring direct displacement of dollar-based instruments.

The Future Is Chain Abstraction

The longer-term result of these trends may be a user experience in which blockchain complexity fades into the background. Kowalczyk describes a future shaped by chain abstraction, where routing, liquidity sourcing, and inter-network communication are handled behind the scenes. Instead of choosing bridges, managing wrapped assets, or manually orchestrating multi-step transactions, users would simply specify an outcome.

In such a model, someone might request receipt of a stablecoin on a particular network, while the underlying infrastructure determines the most efficient route to achieve it. That vision depends on robust interoperability, automated execution, and readily available stablecoin liquidity across multiple ecosystems. If those elements come together, the result could be a financial interface that is both more powerful and less visible to the end user.

Kowalczyk’s broader thesis is that finance is entering a phase where the best infrastructure will increasingly be invisible. The systems that win may not be the ones users notice most, but the ones that make complexity disappear while preserving security, speed, and reliability.

Adaptation Over Resistance

The message to traditional financial firms is ultimately strategic rather than ideological. Stablecoins are not just crypto-native instruments competing for attention; they are part of an emerging settlement layer that can shorten transaction cycles, improve operational efficiency, and support new forms of automated financial activity. The same applies to native swaps and AI agents: each represents a step away from brittle, manually managed systems toward more resilient and programmable infrastructure.

Kowalczyk emphasizes that technology alone does not guarantee a better financial system. Poor design can still create new vulnerabilities, especially when automation and interoperability scale at the same time. But if implemented carefully, the combination of native swap architecture, AI-powered automation, and stablecoin integration could make global finance more predictable, more accessible, and more responsive to user needs than legacy models allow.

For incumbents, the decision may come down to a simple choice: adapt to this infrastructure shift, or risk becoming increasingly irrelevant as financial users migrate toward faster and more flexible rails.
