Travala, a crypto-friendly online travel booking platform, has reported a 205% surge in booking revenue for May 2020, reaching $68,162, as travel demand begins to recover despite ongoing coronavirus restrictions. Notably, over 60% of all bookings were settled using cryptocurrencies, highlighting the growing adoption of digital assets in real-world services.
Travel Demand Roars Back
The company’s May performance report, released on June 1, 2020, shows that consumer confidence in travel is returning after months of lockdowns and border closures. Travala noted: “We have endured a turbulent few months, due to travel restrictions and border closures resulting in cancellations and reduced bookings. However, confidence and a desire to travel are returning with a significant increase in demand.” The number of room nights booked in May totaled 541, a 45.8% increase from April. The top destination countries booked include the United States, Thailand, Spain, the Netherlands, Australia, Poland, and Vietnam.
Traffic to Travala.com also saw remarkable growth. Direct traffic from the U.S. jumped 541%, followed by Vietnam (118%), the U.K. (80%), the Netherlands (56%), and Germany (54%). These figures suggest that travelers are actively planning future trips despite uncertainty, and that crypto-friendly booking options are gaining traction.
Cryptocurrency Payments Dominate
One of the most striking findings is the dominance of crypto payments. Travala accepts a wide range of digital currencies, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Binance Coin (BNB), Litecoin (LTC), XRP, ADA, and its own native token AVA. In May, 21% of all bookings were paid in Bitcoin, 16% in AVA, 14% via Crypto.com Pay, 2% in BNB, and 7% in other cryptocurrencies. Traditional payment methods (credit card and PayPal) accounted for the remaining 40%. Overall, more than 60% of total bookings were paid with cryptocurrencies, a record high for the platform.
Travala has integrated with major players in the crypto ecosystem, including Binance, Litecoin Foundation, Digibyte, Tron, Huobi, Bitcoin.com, Gemini, Komodo, Waves, Coingate, Gocoin, Kucoin, Crypto.com, and Changelly. On the travel side, it partners with Booking.com, Priceline, and Travelbybit, giving users access to over 600 airlines and 2 million hotels worldwide.
Industry Implications and Outlook
Travala’s performance is a bright spot in a travel industry devastated by the pandemic. While many traditional booking platforms have seen declines, Travala’s crypto-native approach appears to be attracting a loyal user base. The company plans to expand its inventory and payment options, including more decentralized finance (DeFi) integrations, to capture the growing demand from crypto holders who want to spend their digital assets.
“We are at the intersection of travel and blockchain technology,” said Juan Otero, CEO of Travala. “Our May numbers prove that there is strong demand for crypto-friendly travel services. We will continue to innovate and provide the best experience for our users.” Analysts believe that if travel continues to rebound and crypto adoption increases, platforms like Travala could become the go-to choice for millions of cryptocurrency enthusiasts worldwide.
The company’s success also underscores the broader trend of cryptocurrency moving beyond speculation and into everyday transactions. As more merchants and service providers accept digital currencies, the utility of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other tokens increases, potentially driving further mainstream adoption.
For now, Travala remains cautiously optimistic. While the pandemic is far from over, the sharp increase in bookings and crypto payments suggests that both travel demand and crypto usage are on the rise. The coming months will be crucial to see if this momentum can be sustained, especially as borders reopen and the global economic recovery takes hold.
