President Donald Trump has publicly warned that a Republican loss in the upcoming midterm elections could lead to his impeachment, injecting fresh political uncertainty into markets already on edge over crypto policy direction.
Trump's Impeachment Alert and Shifting Polls
Speaking before the House of Representatives, Trump said: “You’ve got to win the midterms. If we don’t win, they’ll find a reason to impeach me. I’ll be impeached.” While impeachment requires a House majority and a two-thirds Senate vote for conviction — a high bar — the political winds are clearly shifting against him.
Polymarket now gives Democrats an 80% chance of taking control of Congress, and The New York Times reports Trump's approval rating has dropped to 42%. Two years ago, Republicans held the White House and both chambers; now the midterm landscape has tilted dramatically.
Crypto Sector Bets on Trump: Policy Momentum at Risk
Since returning to office, Trump has positioned himself as a pro-crypto president. He has backed the GENIUS Act to regulate stablecoins, halted CBDC research, and supported state-level Strategic Bitcoin Reserve bills in Arizona, New Hampshire, and Texas. This stands in stark contrast to the Biden era, marked by aggressive SEC enforcement under former chair Gary Gensler.
Markets have already registered the shift. Bitcoin surged 63% between November 2024 and January 2025, reaching an all-time high of $109,588. It now trades around $93,000, and analysts warn that a further slide toward the December 2025 low of $83,000 is possible if political uncertainty deepens.
History of Impeachment and Market Sentiment
Trump is no stranger to impeachment. He was impeached twice during his first term — in 2019 and 2021 — and acquitted both times. But a Democratic takeover of the House would allow the chamber to initiate proceedings again, even if a Senate conviction remains unlikely. The prolonged political battle alone could erode investor confidence in the continuity of pro-crypto policies.
Polymarket still puts the odds of Republicans retaining power at 67%, meaning the race is far from decided. But the political risk premium is already priced into crypto: Bitcoin has fallen more than 15% from its peak, and the midterm elections are shaping up to be the next major catalyst.
