The crypto market enters January with a supply-side stress test. Tokenomist data shows that while the full $5.5 billion in unlocks won't hit the market all at once, $2.55 billion is scheduled in large tranches and the remaining $3.03 billion will be distributed throughout the month. The scale exceeds November and December 2025 unlocks of $5.45 billion and $3.81 billion, both of which pushed prices to their lowest points during those periods.
Demand is showing some signs of life: total crypto market cap rose 1.66% to $3.16 trillion at writing. Whether that momentum can absorb the incoming supply is the central question.
Four Tokens Lead the Pack: ONDO, BGB, HYPE, TRUMP
Together, these four tokens represent $1.94 billion of the unlock volume. The largest single unlock belongs to ONDO, the real-world asset token, with $840 million expected to enter circulation. Yet ONDO's fundamentals remain robust: its total value locked hit a record $1.94 billion, surpassing its market cap, per CoinMarketCap. That TVL/market cap inversion suggests the protocol may be undervalued relative to user activity.
Bitget's exchange token BGB follows with 140 million tokens ($500 million) unlocking on January 26. Notably, BGB's trading volume surged 236% to $77 million, a pattern that historically has preceded price appreciation.
HYPE, the native token of decentralized perp platform Hyperliquid, will see $327 million unlocked. On-chain data shows $1.1 million in daily protocol fees and $54.5 million in net HYPE purchases by investors over the past 24 hours. The protocol's buyback program and top-tier daily trading volume keep the sentiment bullish.
Donald Trump memecoin TRUMP has the smallest unlock at $270 million. Analysts project memecoins could capture up to 11% of altcoin market cap this month, which would benefit TRUMP if the trend materializes. Still, the thesis remains speculative.
Supply vs. Demand: A Familiar Test
December and November 2025 both saw price declines after large unlocks. The current environment differs slightly: liquidity is marginally better, and the 1.66% daily gain suggests some buying pressure. However, the cumulative $5.5 billion release cannot be ignored. Tokenomist's data also indicates that the staggered unlock schedule may mitigate immediate shocks, but the full effect will likely compound toward month-end.
