Crypto analyst Altcoin Sherpa warns altcoins are 'rekt' and that a full altcoin season requires either a final capitulation or a long consolidation period. The altcoin season index currently stands at 20/100, far from the 75 threshold.

The 2024 crypto market rally has been largely dominated by Bitcoin (BTC), along with artificial intelligence (AI) and meme coins, while most altcoins have suffered consistent declines since March. On June 20, analyst Altcoin Sherpa (217,000 followers on X) laid out two prerequisites for a full-scale altcoin season to emerge.

Current Market Landscape: Bitcoin Dominance, Altcoins Bleeding

As of June 22, the total crypto market capitalization stands at $2.34 trillion, with Bitcoin commanding 54% and Ethereum around 18.3%. Altcoins have been hit disproportionately hard during the recent downtrend. The analyst stated: “Personally still of the opinion that alt charts look pretty rekt and I don’t see any strong strong moves quite yet.”

The Two Conditions

According to Sherpa, one of the following developments must occur before a true altcoin rally can begin:

1) Final Capitulation — a last shakeout that forces weak hands to exit, cleansing the market.

2) Longish Consolidation Period — an extended sideways move that allows accumulation and sets the stage for a breakout.

The analyst predicts that once these conditions are met, a “face melting rally eventually” will follow, with most altcoins reaching “much higher prices later this year.” However, he acknowledged that precise timing remains uncertain.

Altcoin Season Index Hits New Lows

The Altcoin Season Index from Blockchaincenter.net currently reads 20 out of 100, down from 35 a month ago (shortly after the SEC approved spot Ethereum ETF 19b-4 filings). A score of 75 or higher is required to declare an altcoin season, meaning at least 75% of the top 50 coins must outperform Bitcoin. The current low score underscores the challenges facing alternative cryptocurrencies.

Outlook

While the path to altcoin season appears steep, Sherpa believes the setup is forming. The combination of capitulation and accumulation could eventually spark a significant rotation from Bitcoin into altcoins. Investors are advised to watch for the two key signals — either a final washout or a prolonged consolidation phase — before deploying capital aggressively.

In summary: The analyst’s message is clear: patience is required. The rally will not arrive without market conditions first turning brutal or boring. For those with a longer time horizon, the current weakness may present a strategic accumulation opportunity in carefully selected altcoins.
