US crypto exchange-traded funds witnessed a sharp reversal on March 5, with combined outflows exceeding $300 million. Bitcoin-focused ETFs shed 3,140 BTC valued at roughly $227.9 million. BlackRock offloaded 1,220 BTC ($88.7 million) while simultaneously purchasing 14,252 Ethereum tokens worth $30.3 million. Fidelity made the largest Ethereum exit of the day, selling 54,093 ETH ($115 million) along with 661 BTC ($48 million). Grayscale sold 260 BTC ($18.9 million) but added 1,741 ETH ($3.7 million). Bitwise contributed with 639 BTC ($46.4 million) and 1,693 ETH ($3.6 million) in sales.
Ethereum, Solana, XRP ETFs Bleed; Chainlink Stands Out
Ethereum spot ETFs alone saw $90.9 million in outflows, equivalent to 42,757 ETH. Among altcoins, Solana-based funds lost 66,072 SOL ($6 million), while XRP ETF holdings decreased by about 4.3 million XRP ($6.15 million). Chainlink emerged as the only bright spot, attracting net inflows of 208,090 LINK tokens worth $1.93 million. Dogecoin, Litecoin, Avalanche, and Hedera funds showed no notable activity.
Previous Day’s Massive Inflows Precede Rebalancing
Just a day earlier, on March 4, BlackRock had purchased 4,490 BTC ($306.6 million) and 19,830 ETH ($39.3 million). The stark contrast between the two days does not signal panic; rather, it reflects active portfolio adjustments. BlackRock and Grayscale reduced Bitcoin exposure while expanding Ethereum positions, while Fidelity trimmed both assets to lower overall risk. Analysts view these moves as routine rebalancing by institutional investors.
Chainlink Inflows Tied to Payment Infrastructure Pilots
Chainlink's positive ETF flows are linked to ongoing payment pilot projects involving Visa and the Reserve Bank of Australia. Institutional interest in blockchain oracle networks is shifting from proof-of-concept to real-world deployment. Chainlink's recent ETF inflows demonstrate tangible traction for blockchain adoption in real-world payment ecosystems,
one industry observer noted. Despite the single-day outflows, the cumulative net inflow across March 4–5 approached $325 million, underscoring sustained institutional appetite despite volatility.
