A wallet controlled by the US government has moved again on-chain. Data shared by Lookonchain on July 16 shows that the government transferred 8.2 BTC to institutional trading platform Coinbase Prime, a transaction worth about $606,000 at the time.
The BTC came from assets seized in the Bitfinex hack case
According to an Arkham Intelligence link included in Lookonchain’s post, the transferred bitcoin came from funds confiscated by US authorities in connection with the 2016 Bitfinex hack. The case remains one of the most widely known security incidents in crypto, and the related BTC has been held in government-controlled wallets after the seizure.
Small transfer, close market attention
By size alone, 8.2 BTC is too small to create meaningful spot selling pressure. Still, traders tend to watch government wallet activity closely. There is a clear reason: US agencies have previously used Coinbase Prime to handle or liquidate crypto assets obtained through enforcement actions.
Because of that history, transfers from government-linked wallets to the platform are commonly read as a possible signal of coming sales. The market focus is less about the immediate impact of this transaction and more about what may follow. Participants are now watching whether this was only a test transaction before a larger bitcoin transfer or liquidation move.
So far, the source material shows no additional public statement from the US government on how the assets will be handled, and market interpretation remains centered on the on-chain movement itself.
