Top Military Official Confirms Bitcoin Node Operation
Responding to Rep. Lance Gooden's questions, Paparo stated: "We have a node on the Bitcoin network right now. We're not mining Bitcoin. We're using it to monitor, and we're doing a number of operational tests to secure and protect networks using the Bitcoin protocol." The previous day, he told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Bitcoin has "incredible potential" as a tool for American "power projection" and national security.
Node Purpose: Monitoring, Not Mining
A Bitcoin full node stores the blockchain's full history and enforces network rules, relaying validated transactions across the P2P network. Unlike mining, running a node yields no rewards and requires no specialized hardware. An estimated 15,000 to 20,000 publicly reachable full nodes exist as of early 2026, with the real figure likely higher. A single military node among tens of thousands poses no threat to Bitcoin's independence, but its operator—INDOPACOM, the command responsible for strategic competition with China—carries symbolic weight.
