On Monday, August 6, 2024, spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) listed in the United States witnessed a notable capital exodus, with a combined net outflow of $168.44 million. This contrasts sharply with the relatively stable performance of Ether ETFs on the same day.

Three Leading Funds Suffer Major Bleeding

Grayscale’s Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) experienced the heaviest outflow, shedding $69.12 million. Since its conversion to an ETF on January 11, 2024, cumulative net outflows from GBTC have reached a staggering $19.13 billion. Ark Invest and 21Shares’ ARKB followed closely with an outflow of $69 million, while Fidelity’s FBTC retreated by $58.04 million, according to data from SoSo Value and CoinGlass.

These three funds accounted for nearly all of the day’s net redemptions, highlighting continued selling pressure on older, higher-fee products.

Mini Bitcoin Trust and Others Buck the Trend

Amid the broad downturn, a few products managed to attract fresh capital. Grayscale’s Mini Bitcoin Trust (ticker: BTC) added $21.81 million in inflows, bringing its cumulative net inflows since launch to $240.81 million. VanEck’s HODL drew in $3 million, and Bitwise’s BITB saw $2.9 million of new money.

BlackRock’s IBIT, along with BRRR, BTCO, EZBC, BTCW, and DEFI, reported zero net flows for the day. IBIT remains the cumulative inflow champion with a staggering $20.10 billion since debut, while Hashdex’s DEFI spot Bitcoin ETF ranks last with only $2.1 million in total inflows.

Market Overview and Reserves

Monday’s trading volume reached a robust $5.24 billion, indicating high market participation. As of August 6, 2024, the 12 spot Bitcoin ETFs collectively hold $48.43 billion worth of Bitcoin reserves, representing approximately 4.51% of Bitcoin’s total market capitalization.

Industry observers note that while short-term volatility in ETF flows is common, the long-term trend remains positive, with institutional adoption continuing to expand. The performance of these funds will likely remain sensitive to macroeconomic factors and Bitcoin price movements in the coming weeks.
