Major US Indexes Ended in the Red
US stocks moved lower on May 5, with all three major benchmarks closing in negative territory. The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted the biggest decline, falling 1.13%. The S&P 500 slipped 0.41%, while the Nasdaq Composite edged down 0.19%. The session reflected broader weakness across the market, even though losses were more moderate in the tech-heavy indexes than in the Dow.
Large-Cap Tech Names Traded Mixed
Performance among major technology and growth stocks was uneven. NVIDIA rose a marginal 0.02%, essentially flat on the day. Alphabet-A fell 0.63%, Apple lost 1.18%, and Microsoft declined 0.2%. On the stronger side, Amazon gained 1.41%, Meta added 0.27%, and Tesla advanced 0.43%. Netflix, however, dropped 1.13%, matching the Dow’s percentage decline.
Micron and SanDisk Hit Record Highs
Among individual stocks, Micron Technology and SanDisk stood out as the session’s strongest performers. Both companies reached all-time highs, with Micron rising more than 6% and SanDisk climbing nearly 6%. Their gains were notable given the broader decline in the major indexes, highlighting continued investor interest in selected semiconductor and storage-related names.
Overall, the May 5 session showed a market where headline indexes weakened but stock-level performance remained mixed. While the major averages all finished lower, pockets of strength in technology and semiconductor shares suggested that sector rotation and selective buying were still active beneath the surface.
