The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC, has sanctioned four Tron wallets linked to the Central Bank of Iran, freezing more than $130 million in digital assets, most of it in USDT. Tether also worked with regulators to freeze addresses that had collectively received more than $165 million in stablecoins. The action marks the third U.S. sanctions move against Iran’s financial infrastructure in the past three months. In April 2026 and June 2026, authorities had already frozen $344 million in assets and sanctioned an exchange, respectively. CryptoBriefing cited analysis saying USDT’s centralized design allows the issuer to freeze funds, setting it apart from decentralized assets.

This is the third U.S. sanctions action targeting Iran’s financial infrastructure in the past three months. Earlier, in April 2026 and June 2026, authorities had frozen $344 million in assets and sanctioned an exchange, respectively.

According to analysis cited by CryptoBriefing, USDT can be frozen by its issuer because of its centralized structure, which distinguishes it from decentralized assets.
