USDT remains the dominant stablecoin by liquidity and universal acceptance across exchanges, yet its reserve composition and audit frequency have long drawn skepticism. USDC differentiates itself with monthly attestation reports from major accounting firms and a preference for cash-like instruments, making it the go-to choice for institutions and U.S.-based operations. RLUSD, a newcomer, prioritizes regulatory compliance and has already integrated into a major card network's settlement system, signaling its ambition to serve cross-border payments and institutional settlement.

Risks: Depegs and the Regulatory Net

Stablecoins are not risk-free. Past depegs, including USDC's brief drop below $0.90 during the 2023 Silicon Valley Bank crisis, highlight that reserve quality and issuer solvency are the true anchors. Regulation is now tightening: the U.S. is pushing for mandatory licensing and 100% reserve backing, while the EU's MiCA framework already applies. For users, choosing a stablecoin means weighing liquidity needs against the issuer's transparency and regulatory posture.
