On August 9, Vespene Energy, a company that converts landfill methane into energy for bitcoin mining, announced it has raised $4.3 million in a funding round led by Polychain Capital. The startup will use the proceeds to expand its pilot project in California, where it captures methane from municipal landfills to power bitcoin miners, effectively “mitigating a major source of greenhouse gas emissions.”

Funding Details and Technology

Polychain Capital founder and CEO Olaf Carlson-Wee said in a statement that the continued adoption of bitcoin will benefit from solutions like Vespene Energy’s product. “We are excited to partner with Vespene as they build a creative solution to use mining to eliminate a potent greenhouse gas source, while making its energy mix greener,” he noted.

According to the company’s website, Vespene installs onsite data centers powered by micro-turbines that run on methane drawn directly from municipal landfills. This setup requires no grid connection or pipeline buildout, giving landfill owners the ability to monetize their methane while “reducing routine flaring and maintenance costs.”

Industry Context and Environmental Impact

The fundraising comes amid heightened scrutiny of Bitcoin’s proof-of-work energy consumption. However, a growing number of firms are demonstrating that bitcoin mining can actually benefit the environment by utilizing waste gases. In late May, Daniel Batten, CEO of Geneious and an ESG analyst, published a report showing that bitcoin mining could reduce global carbon emissions by 5.32% and is arguably the best method to cut methane.

Vespene is not alone in this space. Companies like Crusoe Energy, Greenidge Generation, Upstream Data, and EZ Blockchain are also transforming flare gas into bitcoin. Crusoe secured $505 million in capital in April 2022, and oil majors including Exxon Mobil, Equinor, and ConocoPhillips have reportedly explored gas-to-bitcoin solutions. Compass Mining also released a documentary on bitcoin mining’s relationship with the oil and gas industry in Wyoming.

Methane Emissions and Carbon-Negative Mining

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that landfills account for 15% of methane emissions in America, though studies suggest the real figure could be higher. Vespene’s technology curbs methane, VOCs, CO2, and NOX emissions. Co-founder and CEO Adam Wright emphasized: “Our goal is to mitigate a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and help fuel the transition to a renewable energy future by using Bitcoin mining to turn landfill methane streams into revenue streams for our customers. Because our sites require no connection to the grid or pipeline buildout, we can rapidly turn otherwise harmful and wasted landfill methane into a clean power source for carbon-negative Bitcoin mining.”
