Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said at the OKX Now 2026 summit in Singapore that artificial intelligence represents both the biggest opportunity and the biggest risk for the crypto industry. Speaking on site, he warned that once mainstream AI models gain access to a user’s thinking process and surrounding context, they may handle information that should not be exposed to such products, including material covered by attorney-client privilege or confidentiality agreements. Buterin also pointed to roughly $1.4 billion in Safe-related losses last year, saying the core problem was the interface layer between the chain and the user rather than the on-chain contract itself. He added that having AI initiate transactions on a user’s behalf could reduce some interface-layer risks, but it also creates new concerns such as prompt injection and whether the model correctly understands on-chain actions. He also said AI is already being used for vulnerability discovery and formal verification, which means security standards will need to rise accordingly.
According to on-site reporting from Foresight News, Vitalik Buterin said at the OKX Now 2026 summit in Singapore that AI is both the biggest opportunity and the biggest risk for the crypto industry.
AI brings upside, but also new exposure
Buterin said that once mainstream models gain access to a user’s thought process and context, they may end up handling information that should not be given to such products, including material covered by attorney-client privilege or confidentiality agreements.
Safe-related losses highlight interface-layer weaknesses
He cited about $1.4 billion in Safe-related losses last year and said the issue lay in the interface layer between the blockchain and the user, not in the on-chain contract itself.
Buterin said AI-driven transaction initiation could reduce part of that interface risk. At the same time, it introduces fresh issues, including prompt injection and whether AI can correctly understand on-chain operations.
Security standards need to move higher
He also said AI is already being used for vulnerability discovery and formal verification, and that security standards need to increase along with that shift.
