According to Vitalik, the experiment involved drafting the text in Chinese in 2024, translating it into English with a local Qwen2.5 model, and then manually editing the output to reduce the chance that readers could attribute the document to him based on writing style alone. Despite those steps, Wang was able to trace the document back to Vitalik by focusing on distinctive patterns in the mathematical and algorithmic explanation sections, including the way concrete numerical examples were presented and how attack scenarios were structured. Vitalik had previously said the anonymity experiment had lasted 13 days and that no one had found the document yet, while also hinting that some search efforts and AI scripts were missing categories of documents that should have been included.

Even so, Franklyn Wang was still able to identify the document by analyzing recurring habits in the mathematical and algorithmic explanation sections. Vitalik said these included features such as the use of specific numerical examples and the logic used to describe attack scenarios. He also suggested that search efforts should “expand the search range a bit,” adding that a number of searches and AI scripts had missed document categories that should have been included.
