Ethereum's true strength goes beyond smart contracts. In a recent post on X, Vitalik Buterin stressed that the blockchain's fundamental value lies in serving as a censorship-resistant public bulletin board — a space where any protocol can post data and cannot be blocked.

Speaking after attending Real World Crypto, Buterin noted that many cryptographic protocols, including secure online voting and certificate revocation, require a publicly writable and readable space where users can publish data blobs. Ethereum fits that need. Upgrades like PeerDAS have already boosted data availability by 2.3x, with potential to scale 10–100x higher. He clarified that this core function doesn't directly require computation or money, though economic incentives (ETH payments) are necessary to keep permissionless anti-spam alive.

Payments & Smart Contracts: Supporting Tools, Not Core

Buterin further explained that ETH payments serve as a natural anti-sybil backstop. ZK payment channels, for instance, can effectively manage API access and prevent abuse. “ETH payment as an anti-sybil tool is a natural backstop in such use cases,” he said. Smart contracts provide security deposits, implement ZK payment channels, and link digital objects for broader interoperability. Yet for most applications beyond handling ETH, smart contracts are merely a convenience. With ZK-SNARKs, the blockchain itself can execute computations independently, but standardizing interactions is complex. Existing infrastructure ensures smooth compatibility across protocols.

Ethereum as a Shared Technical Layer

From a broader lens, Ethereum operates as a universal shared memory layer for decentralized, private, and secure applications. Low fees and a strong scaling roadmap make it increasingly practical for developers. Buterin concluded that ETH, smart contracts, and blockchain data availability form a coherent stack, powering everything from payments and DeFi to secure software management.
