Wang Chun said in a post on X that Oleksii Trofimchuk filed a lawsuit against Lido and Stakefish in the Santa Clara County Superior Court on Sept. 8, alleging that after his wallet was compromised, competing MEV bots captured the related ETH by sending transactions with higher priority fees. Chun said Stakefish, acting as a validator, includes valid transactions according to Ethereum’s protocol rules and is not in a position to determine off-chain ownership of assets or resolve disputes over who is entitled to them. He argued that forcing validators that followed protocol rules to return rewards based on off-chain legal or ownership claims would set a dangerous precedent. In his view, that would pressure validators to filter transactions based on claims they cannot independently verify, create legal uncertainty around staking rewards, and weaken Ethereum’s decentralization and its principle of “credible neutrality.”
Odaily reported that Wang Chun said in a post on X that Oleksii Trofimchuk filed a lawsuit against Lido and Stakefish in the Santa Clara County Superior Court on Sept. 8. The suit alleges that after Trofimchuk’s wallet was compromised, competing MEV bots captured the related ETH by submitting transactions with higher priority fees.
Chun’s response on validator duties
Chun said Stakefish, as a validator, includes valid transactions under Ethereum protocol rules and cannot determine off-chain asset ownership or adjudicate disputes between different parties over who owns those assets.
He said requiring validators that followed the protocol to claw back rewards based on off-chain legal or ownership claims would create a dangerous precedent. According to Chun, that would push validators to screen transactions based on legal or ownership claims they cannot independently verify, leave staking rewards exposed to legal uncertainty, and damage Ethereum’s decentralization and its “credible neutrality.”
